The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi had three bilateral meetings today in Brisbane, ahead of the G20 summit beginning tomorrow.

He met the Prime Minister of Britain Mr. David Cameron, the President of the European Union

8 (2)-684 Mr. Herman van Rompuy and had a dinner meeting with the Prime Minister of Japan Mr. Shinzo Abe. 

In all three meetings the Prime Minister laid stress on delinking religion from terrorism. The EU, UK and Japanese sides all agreed on the importance of this.

The agreement between India and the US on food security issues with regard to the WTO was welcomed by the EU, UK and Japan, and all three expressed support for it. It was described as a win-win situation. 

In all three meetings, the Prime Minister said that modernization of the Railways was a priority for him. 


The EU and UK stressed on the need to resolve issues related to the Broadbased Investment and Trade Agreement. the EU side said that the EU and India had shared values and shared interests, which would be furthered by this agreement. The European Union also supported the proposal for an International Yoga Day.

The Japanese side thanked India for the Japan-plus initiative for Japanese investment proposals. Shri Narendra Modi expressed appreciation over the recent visit of the Deputy Mayor of Kyoto to Varanasi. Both sides also discussed multilateral issues, including matters likely to come up at the G20 meeting, and UN reform.
