On the evening of Thursday 15th June 2013 Shri Narendra Modi addressed teachers, inspiring them to make the Shala Praveshotsav and Kanya Kelavani 2013-14 in urban areas a success. The enrollment drive will take place in the urban areas of Gujarat on June 20-21-22. The drive for rural areas ended on 15th June. Shri Modi pointed that if we are able to make this drive a success in the urban areas, we are covering almost 50% of the state’s population. He also said that even a dropout rate of 0.01% in the cities is a big blot. In his speech, he stressed on the usage of latest technology and spoke about the importance of Aanganwadis in the life of a child. Shri Modi also talked about the need of coming out of tokenism and working determinately to achieve desired results.

Shri Modi affirmed, “We should think of the poorest of the poor, how little children can be taken care of and how we can educate them. By excluding the last person in the queue we would achieve nothing.” He also said that every great social reformer has integrated the underprivileged and walked with them.

The Chief Minister asked, “Why cannot the schools in our cities have facilities that attract the neo-middle class, who desire to send there children to good schools but in the process have to take huge loans? If we make our schools attractive for them, they need not take these loans.” Shri Modi also avowed that even the poorest of the poor want to educate their children. “We see in the newspapers- children of poor people are doing well in the Class X and Class XII exams. These are all iconic things. It shows that they have talent, so why cannot we give them the opportunity?” He went on to say that merely constructing big buildings will not do but an atmosphere needs to be created and the people of the family need to be integrated.

Shri Modi opined that a way to increase participation and integrate people is to make the foundation day of every school into a celebration. He said, “There are many schools that would have been there for over hundred years. We can find their students, their teachers. These schools can be a Shakti Kendra.”

He also congratulated the newly chosen office bearers in the various corporations in Gujarat.
