Gujarat on top in producing best quality seeds

Talking with the farmers through video conference as a part of Krishi Mahotsav today Chief Minister Narendra Modi said that State government has taken enough care to provide for the requirement of 5.25 lakh quintal of seeds for Kharif crops. “The state government has kept a stock of 50,000 quintal of quality seeds over and above the requirement”, he said.

Mentioning the state government’s efforts for making farmers aware about the uncertified seeds he said that state’s forensic science lab carry out DNA fingerprint test to examine the quality of seeds. The state government has set up 11 tissue-culture lab, he said.

The use of sub-standard seeds spoils the entire year of farming. Considering this the state government has focused on the production and supply of the certified quality seeds. The four agricultural universities carry out research on best quality seeds for the different crops as per eight agro-climatic zones. The farmers from all corners of India come to Gujarat for buying of best quality seeds. Gujarat is on top for producing the best quality seeds of cotton, castor and millet, he said.

In order to produce and provide best quality seeds to farmers the state government has come up with seed village scheme. Under this scheme, Gujarat has covered the crops like cotton, groundnut and castor too, which are not included in the Centre’s scheme, he said.

The ‘Gurabini’ brand of the state government has become popular. The immunity in the improved strain of date, cumin and castor has increased greatly, he said.

During the talk, the Chief Minister enumerated examples of the progressive farmers who earn high income by making new experiments and using best quality seeds.
